d /Deaf and Hard of Hearing Community

What ages does. Dr. Barrett work with within the d/Deaf and hard of hearing community?

Dr. Barrett specializes in working with parents of d/Deaf children with behavioral issues and with adults. She is skilled in adapting Parent Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) in particular to work with parents in their child's native language, whether it be spoken English, ASL, or PSE, while considering the unique challenges that may arise when working with a deaf child. Dr. Barrett also generally specializes in working with adults ages 18+ who are experiencing upcoming life transitions, mild OCD, anxiety, or struggles with identity.

Which struggles of individuals in the d/Deaf and hard of hearing community does Dr. Barrett specialize in? What makes Dr. Barrett uniquely qualified to work with the d/Deaf and hard of hearing community?

Being a part of the d/Deaf community is not only a unique cultural experience, but it also comes with its own difficulties and stressors. As a member of the deaf community herself as a hard-of-hearing individual and Gallaudet University graduate, Dr. Barrett is sensitive to these facts, as well as to the delicate and diverse considerations that come with someone's d/Deaf identity. Working with individuals to help them find their place in the community, identify resources when appropriate, and generally move toward the life they are striving to lead are some of the ways that Dr. Barrett incorporates her specialized training and experience into working with members of the d/Deaf community. Dr. Barrett is also passionate about giving access to the ability to receive services in an individual's primary language rather than relying on interpreters in their most vulnerable moments.

The same is true for Dr. Barrett's work with d/Deaf children. Given that about 95% of deaf children are born to hearing parents, Dr. Barrett is sensitive to and aware of the unique challenges that a parent might face when learning how to best manage their deaf child's behavior. Dr. Barrett's unique training allows parents to access evidence-based interventions, such as PCIT, by helping them communicate with their child while shaping their behavior.
